International re-refining experience
Chemical Engineering Partners has been in business since 1982.
Chemical Engineering Partners
Chemical Engineering Partners brings together process technology, engineering and operational knowledge to renew one of the world’s valuable resources.
Chemical Engineering Partners
CEP designs plants to turn used oil into a new base oil supply.
CEP is a process technology company providing used oil re-refining technology, licensing, engineering designs, process simulation and consulting services to clients worldwide.
CEP’s work combines an understanding of the chemistry with the practical requirements of plant design and operation. From CEP’s base in Anaheim, California, CEP supports projects through engineering, training, startup and ongoing technical assistance.
Chemical Engineering Partners has been in business since 1982.
CEP began offering its own hydrotreating catalyst, extending its technology offering for used oil re-refining.
CEP’s approach
Dedicated expertise in used oil re-refining, catalyst application and process design.
Training and hands-on support that help operating teams develop independence.
A focus on plant efficiency, operating costs and effective capital investment.
Sustainability
Recover the material. Preserve its value.
Re-refining removes contaminants and upgrades used oil so it can return to use as base oil for new lubricants. It supports resource conservation by recovering a useful material from the existing lubricant cycle.
CEP’s contribution is technical: a process and the engineering knowledge to put resource recovery into commercial practice. Environmental performance is evaluated in the context of each plant, energy supply and operating conditions.
Company history
From CEP’s published company history, documenting its origins and technology development.
Chemical Engineering Partners (CEP) was established in 1982 as an affiliate of Evergreen Oil, Inc. (EOI), a company that pioneered the advanced technology of re-refining used lube oil to produce lube base oils. EOI experienced all the problems of a new oil recycling startup including severe fouling, carbon deposition and a very short catalyst life. CEP was engaged to solve these issues. As soon as CEP installed a proven fix, drastic improvements in on-stream performance were observed. This technique solved major problems of fouling and carbon deposition but did very little to enhance the life of the hydrotreating catalyst. Frequent shutdowns for catalyst change led to low on-stream performance. CEP directed their research to improve catalyst life for re-refining of used lubricating oils resulting in significant technological improvements. This proven, modified process called the CEP Process is currently in use at all CEP-designed facilities completed or under construction.
Since 1982 CEP has developed significant engineering know-how beyond re-refining of waste oil. In 1995, CEP tackled hydrotreating applications such as diesel, gasoil and aviation fuel hydrosulfurization and white oil production. CEP has worked with world-renowned catalyst manufacturers to provide process designs for the production of white and specialty oils. CEP also has considerable experience in the treatment of hazardous and non-hazardous wastewater effluents from oil processing and other sources.
In June 2009, CEP introduced their own brand of hydrotreating catalyst, CEP-HRX™. CEP used the knowledge gained from years of experience designing used oil re-refineries and experience using various types of catalyst to provide the best hydrotreating catalyst for used oil re-refining. CEP currently markets their catalyst in conjunction with CEP designed hydrotreating plants although it is also available to existing hydrotreating facilities.
Today, CEP is proud to provide re-refining technology, basic engineering designs, process simulation and consulting services to clients world-wide. CEP remains committed to continuously improving the underlying Wiped Film Evaporation - Hydrotreating technology with three objectives in mind: to increase on-stream efficiency, reduce operating costs and to reduce capital investment costs.
