Hydrotreating
The chemistry behind API Group II base oil production.
In the mid-1990s high quality base oils were formulated to meet automotive engine oil specifications for higher fuel economy and lower environmental impact. This was accomplished with high severity hydroprocessing of virgin lube. Recycled base oils can only achieve this quality through re-refining with hydrotreating, precisely the process designed by CEP. Other processes generally do not achieve this quality.
Hydrotreating accomplishes this by two main processes: 1) the removal of sulfur and nitrogen compounds and 2) the saturation of aromatics and other unsaturated compounds to meet API Group II specifications.
CEP’s hydrotreating process, in combination of CEP-HRX™ catalyst, produces the best quality of API Group II base oil, equal or superior to virgin base oil.
